California billionaires tax falls short of majority support, poll finds
Billionaires tax plan still lacks majority support as Californians begin voting according to a new Citrin-POLITICO poll.
Likely voters are essentially where they were a month ago, according to the poll, with 46% in favor of Proposition 40 and 43% against — despite a recent pushed by supporters of the measure, including the senator. Bernie Sandersto rally support for the 5% flat tax on billionaires’ assets.
Falling short of a majority this late in a campaign is a red flag, ballot initiative veterans say, and the static support reflects how difficult it has been for supporters to convert anti-billionaire sentiment into likely votes, said Jon Cohenfounder and CEO of True pointwhose company responded to the survey.
“Californians think billionaires should pay more” Cohen ” said, but “that doesn’t translate so easily into a vote in favor of this tax.”
