Cam Skattebo: I was punished for fumble and I understand why the Giants did that
Giants running back Cam Skattebo only played a handful of snaps in Sunday’s loss to the Saints and he never touched the ball, but head coach John Harbaugh said that was unintentional and that Skattebo was not on the bench after losing a fumble in overtime in their Week 5 tie with the Commanders.
Skattebo had a somewhat different view of things. Skattebo said he “didn’t expect to have no hits”, but… as shown before the match – that he had been told he would see a sharp reduction in playing time.
“I was punished for what I did and I understand it” Skattebo said, via Charlotte Carroll of TheAthletic.com. “I have to be ready when coach calls me and it wasn’t today. . . . The message was to keep your head down and keep going. They understand the type of player I am and I just have to continue to do my job and do it to the best of my ability.
Skattebo confirmed the punishment was related to the fumble and reiterated that he accepted the team’s decision.
“It’s hard, but I made mistakes and I have to own up to them,” Skattebo said. “If that’s what they want to do – keep me out because of this – I completely understand. I can’t make mistakes at this level of this game and when you make mistakes like that there will be consequences.”
The Giants got 34 yards on 14 carries from Tyrone Tracy, Devin Singletary and Najee Harris on Sunday, so they had to really stick to their guns to avoid looking in Skattebo’s direction for an offensive spark that only came when JJ McCarthy came in at quarterback with the Giants trailing 34-10 in the fourth quarter. Now we’ll wait to see if Skattebo gets another chance against the Texans in Week 7.
