Comments Off on Canada’s response to Trump tariffs sparks allegations of US election interference
  • Canada has targeted its retaliatory tariffs on politically important states and products ahead of the U.S. midterm elections.

Driving the news: The embassy cited Canada’s targeted tariffs as part of accusations of influence outlined in a fact sheet on Wednesday.

  • He cites remarks by Industry Minister Mélanie Joly, including at a press conference in August, during which she said Canada was “targeting products that would target the states of the United States.”

  • She added: “We are using wisdom and strategy to exert political pressure.” Joly has echoed this message throughout the trade tensions.
  • The fact sheet also cited Joly’s meeting with Democrats. She recently huddled with Illinois Governor JB Pritzker.

What they say: Asked about these accusations during a press conference, Prime Minister Mark Carney declared that “all our actions are in the interest of Canadian workers, Canadian families and the future of this economy.”

Zoom out: The fact sheet also singled out Conservative Ontario Premier Doug Ford for a 2025 anti-tariff campaign ad that featured excerpts from a Ronald Reagan speech.

  • He also cited liberal Rep. Anthony Housefather’s campaign for Florida Democratic Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz.
  • The memo said: “The Canadian government dismisses concerns about possible interference in U.S. elections, even as its ministers and prime ministers openly describe its plans to influence U.S. policy in official documents and public appearances. »

Catch up quickly: Hoekstra said in a recent podcast interview that U.S. officials are “closely monitoring” Canada for possible election interference.

  • Joly said last week that it was “absolutely unfair” to characterize Canada’s actions as election interference. Her visits, she said, were aimed at attracting investment.
  • Carney, after praising Canada’s reduced dependence on the United States in a speech earlier this month, joked, “Be careful, they might think this is election interference,” apparently a dig at Hoekstra.

Please note: The Trump administration has taken an increasingly hostile approach toward Canada, ranging from trade tensions to threats to its sovereignty.

  • In August, Trump signed an executive order to rename Lake Ontario, which straddles the Canada-U.S. border, to “Lake America.”
  • He kept repeating that Canada should become the “51st State”.

The big picture: Trump himself has openly weighed in on politics beyond America’s borders, including during Canada’s 2025 election campaign and ahead of this month’s Israeli elections.
