
Canadian cyber executive indicted in federal hacking case
A Canadian cybersecurity executive who held senior positions at companies that helped victims of data breaches negotiate ransom payments with cybercriminals. was accused in a federal data hacking and extortion case.
Edward DubrovskyWHO recently published a book on how to deal with cyber extortion, is now charged with conspiring to commit that same crime by threatening to disclose stolen or hacked data and interfering with interstate commerce through extortion, according to court records. A legal complaint detailing the allegations made against Dubrovsky remains under seal.
Following his arrest, Dubrovsky — who is 54, according to federal records — appeared in U.S. District Court in Philadelphia on Thursday. District judge Scott Reid ordered Dubrovsky transferred to the Eastern District of Texaswhere the charges were filed, according to court records. It is not clear whether Dubrovsky has been indicted in a major federal hacking case touted by FBI leaders Friday morning. The timing of the two cases, however, seems to coincide.
