Canva announces changes and layoffs affecting 22% of its staff
Canva is making significant changes affecting 1,271 people, or 22% of its staff, co-founder and CEO Melanie Perkins announced today. “For some people, this will mean changes in their roles or being asked to move to centralized centers,” says Perkins. “Unfortunately, this will also mean saying goodbye to the teammates and friends who helped make Canva what it is today.”
In his memo to staff, Perkins states that:
After exploring a wide range of alternatives, I have come to the difficult conclusion that small changes will not be enough. To prepare for the next decade, we need to rebuild Canva, returning to our roots as small, empowered teams, free to make decisions, take ownership, and focus on what matters most to our community.
Canva’s changes include consolidating its Product, Growth and Platform teams into a single product organization, “simplifying layers” and “consolidating overlapping responsibilities”, and making Sydney the “headquarters for more of our product teams, as well as roles in other specialties where shared context and close collaboration are particularly important”. Starting in January, Canva will also “expect” most hybrid employees to spend 2-3 days in an office each week “based on what makes sense in your region.”
Employees who leave Canva will receive benefits including at least six months of salary, twelve months of health coverage, and career support resources.
