Capcom plans to use AI to speed up the game development process
The company previously said it would not use AI-generated content in its games.
Video game companies are increasingly relying on AI to develop new titles and Capcom will be the latest to adopt this approach. At a company conference, Capcom detailed the next steps for the RE Engine, its proprietary video game engine, which includes the use of AI to improve efficiency during the game development process. As first reported GameBiz And IGNCapcom’s game engine would be the subject of a major improvement project called REX, to ultimately become an “AI generation game engine”.
Capcom programmer Satoshi Ishida explained at the conference that using AI would primarily help streamline development workflows. Ishida explained that games and their assets have become much larger these days, leading to longer development times. Based on Capcom’s latest remarks, it doesn’t appear that the company will use AI-generated assets in its video games, but rather will employ AI to speed up the game development process.
Previously, Capcom said during a Q&A session at a shareholders’ meeting that it would explore ways to use AI to aid in tasks such as graphics, sound and programming, but clearly stated that it would not use AI-generated content in its games. This approach would align with Capcom’s desire to breathe new life into some of its old franchises, especially since the company has seen success with the release of Onimusha: Way of the Sword. Other major gaming companies have also welcomed the use of AI for game development, such as Epic Games detailing that it would integrate Claude and Gemini into Unreal Engine earlier this year.
