Officials in Todd County, Minnesota, say the area has “several suspected cases of measles” and unvaccinated residents are at risk of infection.

The county announced the suspected cases on its website in a news article Friday, but did not provide an exact number. On Thursday, the Minnesota Department of Health said there have been 24 cases of measles in the state this year.

Todd County is located in central Minnesota and is home to 28 townships and 12 towns, including Browerville, Long Prairie, and Staples.

The Mayo Clinic says measles is caused by a virus that spreads through the air and settles on surfaces. Symptoms include fever, dry cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes, and may appear about seven to 14 days after contact with the virus. Health experts say a vaccine can prevent infection.

Health officials are asking residents to report measles symptoms to their health care provider or Todd County Health and Human Services.

Fillmore County in southeastern Minnesota said Thursday the area had six cases of measles. Health officials said the six people who contracted the disease were related and were not vaccinated.
