Cheerios partners with Ziploc for resealable cereal boxes
Fresh O is coming for Cheerios fans.
General Mills’ iconic whole-oat cereal is making a change from its bright yellow cereal boxes, after teaming up with Ziploc to include a resealable bag inside its packaging.
Ziploc bag technology, called PantrySeal, was created to open just halfway across the top of the bag, forming a pour spout. This can then be resealed – no more half-folded cereal bags inevitably unfolding – and eliminates the problem of cereal perishing well before its expiration date, while reducing awkward spills.

As of Tuesday, the new bag-and-box combos for Cheerios and Honey-Nut Cheerios are now available exclusively at Walmart.com, although they will roll out to other retailers across the country in the coming months, according to a press release.
According to General Mills, Cheerios and Ziploc had already received countless requests over the years from customers wanting to do something about substandard cereal packaging.
According to a survey conducted by consumer information platform Suzy in December 2025, 90% of cereal consumers use tongs, cereal containers and even clothespins to keep their favorite breakfast foods fresh.
Emilie Knox, vice president and business unit manager for Cheerios at General Mills, said the collaboration will make customers’ lives a little easier.
“Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal eliminates a small daily cereal frustration and finally gives consumers the simple solution they’ve been asking for, making the entire routine easier and more enjoyable,” Knox said in a statement.
An unidentified Ziploc representative echoed this sentiment.
“Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal is an exciting new expression of what the Ziploc brand can do: bringing our expertise in resealable freshness directly into the Cheerios package and the Ziploc brand into the pantry in a whole new way,” reads the bag brand’s press release.
Reactions to the new collaboration between the brands have been largely filled with enthusiasm, although some feel the change has been a long time coming.
“Literally this requires no marketing,” one commenter said when TikTok creator @girlbosstown announced the news. “Seeing this in store, I would immediately choose the brand that ziplocks.”
“I’ve been saying for YEARS that cereal and chip companies need to do this,” another snack fan added.
“It’s what people want,” added a third cereal lover.
But the question “Why did it take so long?” over X seems to be the general feeling among Cheerios fans, at least the new packaging will now keep their O’s fresh longer.
