Comments Off on Cher responds after Michael Douglas criticizes Oscar win for ‘Moonstruck’

Cher gracefully responds to Michael Douglas’ viral diss over his 1988 Oscar win for “Moonstruck.” A rep for the music and theater icon bluntly told Entertainment Weekly, “Cher loves Michael Douglas. »

At the 60th Academy Awards in April 1988, Cher won the best actress award over Glenn Close, Douglas’ co-star in “Fatal Attraction.” Douglas still disagrees with the Academy’s decision nearly 40 years later. Appearing alongside Close on a recent episode of “The Graham Norton Show,” Douglas noted that “she should have won (the Oscar) with ‘Fatal Attraction'” and that Close “had been nominated, I believe, (for) her fourth” Oscar at that point. When the actor noted that Cher won the Oscar, Norton responded, “Oh wow,” prompting Douglas to criticize Cher: “I know, that’s what we all said!”

“Michael, be nice,” Close then responded, turning to Douglas as the studio audience laughed.

All three actors were nominated for the 1988 Academy Awards, with Cher winning best actress for “Moonstruck” and Douglas winning best actor for his role in Oliver Stone’s “Wall Street.” Douglas was the only nominee for his film, while “Moonstruck” was up for six awards, including best picture. The romantic comedy also won Academy Awards for Adapted Screenplay and Supporting Actress (Olympia Dukakis). “Fatal Attraction,” meanwhile, was also nominated for six Academy Awards, but left empty-handed. The two films battled it out for Best Picture and Best Director, but lost to “The Last Emperor” and Bernardo Bertolucci, respectively.

As Douglas noted, Close entered the 1988 Academy Awards as a four-time Oscar nominee. She previously earned three nominations in the best supporting actress category for “The World According to Garp,” “The Big Chill” and “The Natural.” “Fatal Attraction” marked Close’s first nomination for best actress. She was then nominated four times for the Oscars for “Dangerous Liaisons”, “Albert Nobbs”, “The Wife” and “Hillbilly Elegy”. She has yet to win a competitive Oscar, but she will receive an honorary statue at the Governors Awards this month.

Cher, meanwhile, won the Oscar for “Moonstruck” after landing a best supporting actress nomination in 1984 for “Silkwood.”
