Chiefs WR Thornton suffers gruesome ankle injury against Raiders.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyquan Thornton suffered a gruesome left ankle injury during the fourth quarter against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.
Thornton’s left foot bent awkwardly under Raiders safety Treydan Stukes as they both hit the turf after Thornton recovered a 55-yard pass from Patrick Mahomes. Thornton attempted to stand up and celebrate the big play, but then collapsed to the turf when he was unable to put weight on the injured ankle.
Thornton left on a wagon as players from both teams knelt in prayer. Kenneth Walker III ran for a 2-yard touchdown for the Chiefs on the next play, and Kansas City went on to win 30-27.
Coach Andy Reid said Thornton’s ankle “doesn’t look good,” adding that he will be further evaluated in Kansas City.
The injury ended a huge day for Thornton, who had five catches for 111 yards and two touchdowns. He caught an 8-yard pass from Mahomes earlier in the fourth. for his second TD to give the Chiefs the advantage 17-13.
“It’s tough when you see your teammates, especially a guy like Tyquan, who’s a great dad and all that,” Reid said. “His attitude is amazing. He’s great for the team and kind of a leader of that group over there.”
Reid highlighted Thornton’s production before the injury.
“For this to happen, especially with the year he’s had, he’s had a phenomenal year so far, and a great game to boot, so it’s tough to see for all the guys,” he said.
It had already been a tough day for Kansas City’s receivers. Rashee Rice suffered a hamstring injury during the first quarter and did not return, leaving Mahomes without one of his top targets.
“It’s tough because these guys have done so much work. I was in this spot last year,” Mahomes said. “Everyone works so hard to get on the field and play the game they love, and just one play can kind of change your season.”
Mahomes said supporting Thornton was a priority.
“You hope for the best,” he said. “But at the same time, you want to show him your support because I know what it’s like when you’re in that position. It’s like the world is closing in on you. You want to make sure you have the support of your teammates.”
