Chris Rock attributes end of marriage to porn obsession and cheating
Chris Rock has admitted his obsession with porn contributed to the breakdown of his 18-year marriage to Malaak Compton-Rock.
“I wasn’t a great husband,” the “Everybody Hates Chris” alum told GQ in his “Men of the Year” profile published Tuesday.
“I watched a lot of porn. I don’t watch porn anymore. I haven’t watched porn in five, six years.”
Rock, 61, reflected candidly on his other mistakes throughout his marriage to Compton-Rock, 57, including not listening, not being nice and cheating with three women.
“It’s not something I’m proud of, but it’s something I had to go through,” he added.
The actor compared his actions to those of a character in the Marvel universe, who must “test his powers” and who is initially an “asshole” before helping people.
“They race trains and lift ocean liners and try to get to the sun, and then they crash because they realize they’re not God,” Rock explained.
“I tested my powers. I definitely realized that I wasn’t God or anywhere near it, and I was very humiliated, as I should have been.”
Rock and Compton-Rock married in 1996 and welcomed two children, Lola, 24, and Zahra, 22, before splitting in 2014.
“After much consideration and 19 years of marriage, Chris and I have decided to separate,” Compton-Rock wrote in a statement at the time.
“Having the chance to lead a life of service working with the most vulnerable makes me realize the blessings of life, even in the face of difficulty. »
The exes finalized their divorce in 2016.
Rock and Compton-Rock reunited in May to celebrate Zahra’s college graduation from the University of Southern California.
After parting ways with Compton-Rock, Rock dated Megalyn Echikunwoke from 2016 to 2020.
He was also linked to Carmen Ejogo in 2020 and Lake Bell in 2022 before moving on with his current girlfriend, Simone Henault, in March.
