Christa Pike’s lawyer says she has not been conscious since her execution failed.
Christa Pike remained unconscious and on a ventilator in a hospital for the four days after her death. execution failure in Tennessee, and his prognosis may not be known for several days, one of his lawyers said Sunday.
Little has been released about Pike’s condition since Wednesday night’s attempted execution. She has remained ever since hospitalized under surveillance as doctors attempt to remove the massive dose of the barbiturate pentobarbital from his system.
Asked if she had ever regained consciousness after the attempted execution, Assistant Federal Defender Stephen Ferrell, Pike’s attorney, responded on CNN’s “State of the Union”: “Not to my knowledge.” »
Lawyer says Pike’s medical decisions are made by someone else
Pike, now 50, was 18 when she and her boyfriend tortured and killed a classmate, Colleen Slemmer, in a jealous rage in 1995. She became one of the youngest women to be sent to death row.
Tennessee prison officials gave Pike two doses of the lethal injection drug Wednesday night. The pentobarbital did not kill her, but her lawyers said her arms were burned and blistered from the caustic drugs.
Pike gave his medical power of attorney to someone and that person is protecting his privacy, Ferrell said.
“I’m not sure how much they may have said to this person,” Ferrell said.
Pike’s lawyers have not identified who makes Pike’s medical decisions. They said they might not know for several days whether or not she could recover.
“We don’t know right now, and we may never know what kind of torture she endured during this process, where her consciousness was, what physical pain there was — what mental torture she endured,” Ferrell said.
A spokeswoman for Pike’s defense team said in a statement Sunday that “we appreciate Christa’s legitimate privacy.”
Pike’s lawyer says Tennessee needs to be more open about executions
Pike’s execution was delayed for more than eight hours Wednesday as the U.S. Supreme Court reviewed, and ultimately overturned, a federal appeals court decision to stay her lethal injection so judges could thoroughly examine whether the jury that sentenced her to death should have taken into account the sexual abuse she said she suffered as a child.
His lawyers asked the court Friday to order Tennessee prison officials to preserve all written records, communications, images or videos of the execution.
Tennessee, like many other states with capital punishment, keeps many details about executions of those involved secret, including how the drugs are made or obtained or what tests are done to verify their quality.
“The state of Tennessee needs to start telling its people exactly what it is doing so that, through the democratic process, the people of Tennessee can decide if this is what they want done on their behalf,” Ferrell told CNN.
Tennessee has already faced executions
It was the second time This year, Tennessee was unable to execute a prisoner who appeared close to death. In May, Tennessee stopped the execution of Tony Carruthers after staff placed an IV in his right arm but were unable to get a secondary IV.
Tennessee Department of Corrections Commissioner Frank Strada announced his resignation Saturday.
Gov. Bill Lee ordered an independent investigation into the state’s capital punishment system, led by former U.S. Attorney Ed Stanton. He also reviewed Tennessee’s enforcement procedures after Lee canceled another execution in 2022 and found the state was not complying with its own lethal injection process.
Prison officials and the Tennessee attorney general’s office haven’t said much since Pike was taken to the hospital.
Future of death penalty case against Pike unclear
It’s unclear what will happen in his death penalty case. Pike’s lawyers asked the governor to commute his sentence to life in prison.
“If she recovers, she may not fully recover. And there could be issues regarding her competency,” Ferrell said.
Pike I didn’t deny she killed Colleen Slemmer, 19, in 1995. The two were classmates in the Knoxville Job Corps.
Prosecutors said Pike feared Slemmer was a romantic rival and lured her to a secluded area where she and her boyfriend slashed Slemmer with a box cutter and beat her with a large piece of asphalt. The case received attention due to the brutality of the murder, the ages of those involved, and the fact that a satanic symbol was carved into the victim’s body.
