In the modern era of the death penalty in the United States, Tennessee has never executed a person aged 18 at the time of the crime – the youngest was 23. Over the past 50 years, the state has sent seven men to death row who were 18 at the time of their murder, but in each case the sentence was overturned.
Tadryl Shipp, Christa Pike’s accomplice, was fascinated by satanic imagery. It was he who carved a pentagram into the victim’s chest, causing the local media to go crazy. Yet because he was 17 at the time, Tennessee law prohibited him from being executed; he is now serving a life sentence and had his first parole hearing, unsuccessfully, in October 2025.
If Pike had been 10 months younger, she too would have been legally protected from the execution chamber. Over time, experts in children’s brain development have come to recognize that 18 is just an arbitrary line in the sand; Adolescents – whatever their age – are prone to impulsive behavior.
And then there is gender. Some argue that the gender of the 45 women currently on death row in the United States has no bearing on their eligibility for the ultimate punishment. But in Pike’s case, it seems entirely relevant, given the agonizing litany of sexual and physical abuse she endured throughout her childhood.
She was subjected to a series of shocking abuses, including multiple rapes by three different men and beatings at the hands of numerous relatives.
Age. Gender. Abuse. The ingredients are all there, Pike’s legal team argues in the clemency request, for his crime, as terrible as it was, to be presented in a different light.
Tennessee’s top prison official resigns following botched execution attempt of Christa Pike.
Over the weekend, Gov. Bill Lee announced that Department of Corrections Commissioner Frank Strada would leave his post at the end of October amid an independent investigation into Pike’s failed execution attempt.
Although he called the case “deeply disturbing,” Lee told reporters last week: “As far as we know, the Department of Corrections followed exactly the protocol that was outlined.” » Separately, Strada said his resignation would be “in the best interest” of the state as the investigation continues.
Death penalty lawyers said Strada oversaw five “botched” executions, common to prolonged suffering among prisoners and questionable injection procedures.
On September 30, Christa Pike, who was to be the first woman executed in Tennessee in more than 200 years, survived two doses of pentobarbital, a sedative.
Witnesses to Pike’s attempted execution described how they heard she was choking and struggling for an hour after receiving the first injection. She was later hospitalized after a second dose failed to kill her. At the hospital, she was placed on a ventilator and was in critical condition.
Speaking to the BBC, Joel Zivot, an anesthetist advising Pike’s team, said: “She has some memories of her hospitalization but no memory, I believe, of the attempted execution. »
Zivot added that Pike was able to remember his name but incorrectly guessed that the current month was September.
