The injury bug takes another piece away from the San Francisco 49ers.
In what was the final issue for the injury-riddled Niners, star running back Christian McCaffrey left the team’s Week 7 contest with a hamstring ailment.
He was seen on his side and taken to the medical tent. Broadcast cameras also showed the running back working his left leg.
McCaffrey missed a long period in the first half and his return was questionable.
It’s just the latest injury issue for the Niners, who entered Week 7 without Mike Evans and many other key pieces on the roster.
With a bye week looming in Week 8, San Francisco opted to be cautious with Evans. It remains to be seen how they will proceed with the star running back, who is the key to Kyle Shanahan’s offense.
Here’s the latest on McCaffrey.
Christian McCaffrey injury update
McCaffrey returned to the game to start the second half.
He warmed up during halftime and was spotted riding a stationary bike on the sideline before the start of the third quarter.
McCaffrey was seen returning to the locker room with 6:14 left in the first half. He wasn’t limping noticeably, but his return was considered questionable due to a hamstring injury, the team announced.
The running back was seen working on his leg by the training staff late in the first quarter against the Falcons in Week 7. In his absence, Kaelon Black handled the workload out of San Francisco’s backfield. He broke through the defense for a 30-yard rushing touchdown to extend the Niners’ lead to start the second quarter.
Jordan James is next behind Black on the depth chart.
49ers RB Depth Chart
- Christian McCaffrey
- Kaelon Black
- Jordan James
The 49ers have handled McCaffrey’s workload at times during the 2026 season, meaning Black has seen his fair share of opportunities out of the backfield. The Indiana product played in Week 1, but has recently taken a step back in his workload and has failed to eclipse the 10-carry mark.
James is in his second year out of Oregon and has only four races this season. All faced the Miami Dolphins on September 20.
