Christian Watson Returns to ‘Thursday Night Football’ After Hospital Trip
Updated October 29, 2026, 10:33 p.m. ET
Green Bay Packers wide receiver Christian Watson suffered an apparent injury after making a deep catch against the Carolina Panthers during their “Thursday Night Football” game.
Watson was working against Panthers cornerback Will Lee in coverage when the wideout completed a 53-yard run. He then fell to the ground after the catch and landed hard on the ball.
Watson remained on the ground after the play and immediately received medical attention from Packers medical staff. Meanwhile, Lee also fell, clutching his hamstring.
Watson eventually left the field and headed to the blue medical tent for further evaluation.
Here’s what you need to know about Watson’s injury:
Christian Watson injury update
Watson officially returned to the Packers’ Week 8 game against the Panthers in the third quarter. This happened despite him being taken to a local hospital for “precautionary tests” following a chest injury.
Jordan Love threw toward Watson on his first return in the game. Watson was unable to recover the pass, which was defended well by two Panthers defenders, and he was no worse off after falling to the ground during the play.
Originally, the Green Bay Packers announced that Watson was “questionable” to return for Thursday’s game due to a chest injury.
Shortly after this announcement, Amazon journalist Kaylee Hartung reported that Watson was taken to a local hospital for “precautionary reasons.” The broadcast showed Watson getting into an ambulance under his own power, still dressed in his uniform.
The Packers later confirmed that Watson was taken to the hospital for “precautionary testing” but did not provide additional news on his status.
But early in the second half, Hartung announced that Watson had been tested at the hospital and was set to return to Lambeau Field. Additionally, the Packers still have not officially ruled Watson out of Thursday’s game, even despite his departure.
The Amazon broadcast then showed video of Watson arriving on the field in the ambulance. He was shown running to the locker room, then back onto the field, as a chorus of cheers rained down from Packers fans in attendance at Lambeau Field.
Before returning to the game, Watson had six catches for 100 yards, but also lost a fumble.
What happened to Christian Watson?
Watson suffered a chest injury while making a 53-yard reception against the Panthers. He made the catch before falling hard to the ground and remaining on the ground after making the catch.
Watson was able to leave the field under his own power and was examined in the blue medical tent. Eventually, he was seen walking to the sidelines and shaking his head before heading to the locker room.
Once there, Watson boarded an ambulance, again under his own power, to be taken to a local hospital for further testing.

Who is Christian Watson’s replacement?
Bo Melton is listed as Watson’s replacement on the Packers’ official depth chart. The Rutgers product has played both receiver and cornerback during his career and entered Thursday’s game having recorded five catches for 34 yards.
Although Melton is Watson’s official replacement, the Packers would likely lean on Matthew Golden to serve as their No. 1 receiver, with Savion Williams serving as Golden’s primary complement. As such, Melton may not see a significant increase in opportunities.
Packers WR Depth Chart
The Packers dressed six receivers for their “TNF” game against the Panthers. Below is the hierarchical order within the unit.
- Christian Watson
- Matthew Golden
- Savion Williams
- Bob Melton
- J. Michael Sturdivant
- Coleman Owen
Golden immediately saw an uptick in work after Watson left the field and eventually recorded a 24-yard touchdown run for Green Bay’s final score in the first half.
During that time, Williams was only targeted twice, but he was also credited with an 18-yard run. As a result, he leads the Packers in rushing yards, and the Packers could set up some short-area touches for him in the second half.
Tight end Tucker Kraft and running back Josh Jacobs could also see an uptick in targets while Watson remains out of action.
