If you ask Chuck Lorre, Melanie Lynskey and Charlie Sheen about the final moments of the series Two and a half men the setting probably wasn’t a highlight for the actress.

In an excerpt from Lorre’s memoirs, Situation comedypublished by Vanity Fair On Friday, the TV creator looked back on when things with Sheen started to “unravel” on the set of the comedy series.

“The last scene we shot was with Charlie and Melanie Lynskey. He couldn’t remember any of his lines and had to use the furniture to hold himself up,” Lorre said in the book, released October 13. “Melanie was terrified. It was clear to everyone that this man, who we had all grown to love, was in trouble. I had no choice but to stop the show.”

Weekly Entertainment has contacted Lynskey and Sheen’s teams for comment.

Sheen played Charlie Harper in Two and a half men for eight seasons from 2004 to 2011, while Lynskey returned as Rose, Charlie’s neighbor. For the first seven years, Lorre wrote that the series “was great to make.” Then Sheen “started calling in sick all the time” for several different reasons.

“The typical excuse was food poisoning, usually bad clams. There were a lot of emergency dental appointments,” Lorre said. “I was once informed that he would not attend rehearsal because his BIC lighter had exploded and burned his eyelashes.”

Lorre thought things were “getting out of hand” but didn’t know what to do. Things changed after Sheen’s high-profile New York hotel incident in October 2010. At the time, it was reported that security was called to Sheen’s room following an apparent disturbance. He was taken to the hospital and a representative for the actor told ABC News at the time that Sheen “had an adverse allergic reaction to some medications.”

In the book, Lorre writes that Two and a half men The cast and crew “worked in a constant state of anxiety” because they never knew what was going to happen next.

After Sheen’s final scene with Lynskey, the showrunner was forced to call the actor and tell him he was quitting the series.

“After it closed, I told him the plan was to shoot two more episodes and then call it a season, which would give it a chance to clean up. He angrily insisted we shoot four more,” Lorre recalled in the excerpt. “I was emotionally exhausted and held on. Two more episodes, then we take a desperately needed three-month break.”

Lorre has since speculated that Sheen “might have needed the money” for two more episodes. THE Two and a half men The creator wrote that at that point, Sheen was “making approximately $1.25 million per episode.”

Eventually, according to Lorre, CBS executives convinced Sheen to agree to drug treatment.

“The show would wait for him to recover, only to resume when he was ready. No harm, no foul. He agreed,” he continued. Sheen, meanwhile, was reportedly “charged” for the next two days. Lorre wrote that the actor began pursuing him publicly, adding that WB “didn’t want Charlie on the lot anymore.”

Sheen corroborated in his Book of shine memoir of CBS executive Les Moonves and offered to use the network’s jet and take him to rehab. “It didn’t go as planned,” Sheen writes in the book published in September 2025, claiming he used a “testosterone cream” that turned him into a “rabid demon” at the end of his life. Two and a half men run.

Lorre then debunked “ridiculously false” rumors that he had Sheen fired from the show. “Anyone who knows anything about television knows that writers don’t have the power to fire the star of a billion-dollar show,” he added.

Years later — after Sheen sued Lorre for $100 million, which they ultimately settled — the two crossed paths again. Sheen was “gracious and grateful,” Lorre recalled.

“We didn’t go into detail throughout Two and a half men nightmare,” he wrote. “It was just over.”

Situation comedy hits shelves October 13.
