Harry Enten says he knows which candidate he would prefer to be in Maine’s Senate race with less than a week until Election Day.
CNN’s chief data analyst made a bold prediction about a race that both sides view as a must-win.
Harry Enten says he “would rather be Troy Jackson at this point than Susan Collins” in Maine’s Senate race, saying President Donald Trump’s atrocious approval rating gives Jackson, the Democrat, an advantage.
“If Donald Trump’s approval rating is what the polls suggest, I would certainly rather be Troy Jackson at this point than Susan Collins,” he said.
However, Enten notes that Senator Collins, in office for three decades, has already defied the dismal poll numbers.
“I kind of put Maine in a special camp, if only because Susan Collins has defied the polls before and she’s been a senator there for 30 years,” Enten told The Bulwark.
Susan Collins, 73, was first elected to the United States Senate in 1996.
A Marist University poll conducted last week found that Collins and Jackson are within two points of each other. It found that 49 percent of likely Maine voters support Jackson, while 47 percent support Collins.
Enten has long sounded the alarm about Trump’s plummeting approval ratings, which he previously called “ridiculously bad.”
Earlier this month, Enten pointed to a Pew Research Center poll that showed Trump’s net approval rating at 38 points, just before the midterm elections.

“No president I have ever seen is in a worse position heading into a midterm election than President Trump,” he said at the time. “You go all the way back. You go back to Harry S. Truman, FDR. At this point, before the midterms, always, always, never…the worst I’ve ever seen is Donald John Trump, 38 points underwater.”
