Cristiano Ronaldo reportedly issues ‘ultimatum’ to Portugal national team amid Jorge Jesus Rift

The rift between Portuguese star striker Cristiano Ronaldo and head coach Jorge Jesus appears to have reached breaking point.

According to ESPN, Ronaldo gave Portugal an ultimatum, saying he would not return to the national team as long as Jesus was the coach.

Ronaldo released a lengthy statement explaining what created the conflict with Jesus, saying that although he initially agreed that “it would be the right choice” to hire Jesus to replace Roberto Martínez after he resigned following the 2026 World Cup, the coach “broke his word” on several occasions, including when he left him on the bench for a Nations League match against Norway.

Things came to a head last week when Jesus said he was not going to start the 41-year-old in Thursday’s match against Denmark, leading Ronaldo to announce he had left the Portugal national team training camp.

“I have decided to leave the camp without waiting for another break in my word,” Ronaldo said in his statement on Tuesday. “For me, the truth remains the most important thing in the relationship between people. Even if it hurts, let them tell me the truth. … I also owe an apology to my national team teammates for leaving the camp. Despite the absolute abuse of trust in the coach’s word, as those who witnessed these conversations can attest, I should not have done it. The responsibility is exclusively mine.”

Ronaldo admitted he could be punished for leaving training camp, but indicated he would be willing to return to the team in the right circumstances.

“That is why, if I am in good physical shape, if I play for my club, with goals that I hope, after serving the suspension that could be applied to me, I will be available, as I have always been until today, to compete and win for our national team,” Ronaldo said. “It is, believe me, the purest truth.”
