Dan Campbell compares his 4th down philosophy to “Uncle Buck”
Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell faced plenty of criticism — and plenty of praise — for his bold decision to go for it on fourth down late against the Green Bay Packers, despite being backed up at his own 24-yard line during a tie game. Even though the Lions didn’t convert, the strategy worked. As Campbell said after the game, he knew that if they didn’t convert, they would still get the ball back for possibly the final possession. Detroit did it, and they made it count with the game-winning field goal.
Campbell was asked again Wednesday about his general fourth-down philosophy, and while talking about his years of experience in the league and his influences like Sean Payton, he also made a hilarious pop culture reference.
He said he views his affinity for aggression on fourth down, much like the main character John Candy in the movie “Uncle Buck” views his iconic trapper/ushanka hat.
“Have you ever seen ‘Uncle Buck?’ “, Campbell begins. “I think I’m a little bit like… his fedora, you know that hat he wears? It’s a little bit of a flavor.”
Then he paraphrases a quote from the film: “Just seeing it bothers a lot of people. »
“So I always think a little bit about ‘Uncle Buck,’ man, when John Candy wears that hat. ‘Is that the hat?'”
Campbell’s analogy wasn’t very clear, but fans of the film may remember this specific scene, where Uncle Buck explains how he thinks people judge him simply based on his hat.
“A lot of people hate this hat. It makes a lot of people angry just looking at it,” says Candy’s character.
Maybe he thinks people just hate fourth-down muggings without even thinking about it. Or they see Campbell as a fool and his fourth-down process as a reflection of shallow thinking. Or maybe it’s just Campbell’s little quirk that you either love or hate.
Either way, this is just another iconic Dan Campbell press conference moment.
