  • ‘Ali G: Who am I?’

Image credit: Amazon MGM Studios / Everett Collection

    Release: Large (October 23)

    Distributer: Amazon MGM Studios

    Director: Sacha Baron Cohen

Screenwriters: Sacha Baron Cohen & Anthony Hines & Peter Baynham & Dan Swimer & Dan Mazer & Keisha Zollar

Cast: Sacha Baron Cohen, Morgana Robinson, Marion Robinson, Alphja Miknas, Clive Russell, Stewart Rodeheaver

    Revision date: October 22

What to remember about the deadline: Sacha Baron Cohen obviously feels that the time has come to bring back his LOL OG when the world has only fallen further into the abyss since his last appearance. While the new film drifts bit by bit, with some straining for laughs, enough things work to make this feel like a vintage Baron Cohen daredevil comedy at the expense of the clueless. — PH

  • “Clay Face”

    Release: Large (October 23)

    Distributer: Warner Bros/DC Studios

    Director: James Watkins

Screenwriters: Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini

Cast: Tom Rhys Harries, Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella, Eddie Marsan

    Initial revision date: October 21

What to remember about the deadline: Whether you’re a comic book enthusiast or a horror junkie, clay face worth the price of admission for its gender-focused take on a lesser-known character, hopefully serving as a roadmap for the DCU’s on-screen future. Maybe prepare yourself if you’re squeamish. -GG

  • “Klara and the Sun”

    Release: Large (October 23)

    Distributer: Sony Photos

    Director: Taika Waititi

Screenwriters: Taika Waititi and Dahvi Waller (based on the book by Kazuo Ishiguro)

Cast: Jenna Ortega, Amy Adams, Mia Tharia, Natasha Lyonne, Aran Murphy, Steve Buscemi, Rachel House, Jesse Griffin

Initial revision date: October 15 (London Film Festival)

What to remember about the deadline: Taiki Waititi should be a perfect fit for Kazuo Ishiguro’s dystopian – or East he? — 2021 novel, given the director’s affinity for a very particular, particular type of gritty reality-based comedy. But Clara simply doesn’t deliver on any front. -DW

  • “A Talent for Murder”

    Director: Anton Corbijn

    Writer: Joanna Murray Smith

Cast: Helen Mirren, Alden Ehrenreich, Olivia Cooke, Juliet Stevenson, James Faulkner

Initial revision date: September 15 (Toronto Film Festival)

What to remember about the deadline: Helen Mirren, playing against the grain, is a revelation in this flawed but highly entertaining duo, which belongs to the unique subgenre of literary biographies in which the life of a cult author is studied through the very specific prism of their work. -DW

Directors-screenwriters: Alex Huston and Eleanor Wilson

Cast: Olivia Colman, Alexander Skarsgård, Peter Dinklage, Elizabeth Debicki, Richard E. Grant, Marli Siu, Nabhaan Rizwan, Gustav Lindh, Ella Bruccoleri, Ben Ashenden, Kiell Smith Binoe

    Initial revision date: October 22

What to remember about the deadline: A hit at Sundance where it was picked up by Black Bear, this tongue-in-cheek film from writer-directors Alex Huston and Eleanor Wilson is sexy and satirically funny, but also strangely haunting as a truly twisted fable that says it’s never too late to become your own best version of Cinderella. — PH

    Release: Large (October 23)

    Distributer: Breaststroke

    Director: Travis Knight

Screenwriter: Chris Butler (based on the book by Colin Meloy)

Cast: Carey Mulligan, Peyton Elizabeth Lee, Jacob Tremblay, Angela Bassett, Mahershala Ali, Awkwafina, Maya Erskine, Jake Johnson, Charlie Day, Tom Waits, Richard E. Grant, Amanda Stenberg, Tantoo Cardinal, Len Cariou, Marc Evan Jackson

Initial revision date: October 11 (London Film Festival)

What to remember about the deadline: The painstaking process of stop-motion animation applied to a tale of a scale rarely seen on this level is a visual coup de grace, and the story is compelling and centers on a scrappy young heroine determined to fight and save her little brother after he is painfully snatched from the streets of Portland by a murder of crows. — PH

What to remember about the deadline: language of love is a return to the classic romantic comedy form, with heart and humor, as well as a talented cast that beautifully brings Joey Power’s storyline to life in a dreamy Chicago setting. -GG
