Debbie Matenopoulos campaigns to replace Kimberly Guilfoyle as US ambassador to Greece
It’s feta!
Greek-American television host Debbie Matenopoulos said she wants to be the next U.S. ambassador to Greece because she has written Greek cookbooks, among other things.
The former “View” co-host kicked things off Thursday morning by campaigning on social media to replace Kimberly Guilfoyle in the role, and later told Page Six that she was completely serious about wanting the job.
“No. 1, I speak the language. It was my native language before I even spoke English. No. 2, I have a Greek passport,” she said.
Matenopoulos added that she owns a house in Greece, in part because “her whole family lives there” except for her immediate family.
“I understand politics, government, people…and I love the country,” she said.
But perhaps the one qualification that will surely set her apart from any other potential is: “I have two best-selling, best-selling Greek cookbooks,” she said. Plus, “I have a very successful Greek skincare line,” she said.
“Don’t disrespect Kim,” she said. “You don’t need any qualifications to be an ambassador to any country… you just need to be an entrepreneur, a successful businesswoman or man, or a political donor.”
And she’s serious.
“All of my journalism training and live television skills have seriously prepared me for this role more than most,” she told Page Six.
She added: “You don’t have to have a political life to do this…I have 30 years of experience in live television. That’s well over 10,000 hours of speaking in front of people on a large scale, but also bringing people together and making them feel seen.”
Matenopolous told us that friends have already contacted Trump on her behalf and that she is already receiving questions about the administration’s representation internationally. “This is not about a political party or an administration. This is about building strong relationships between the two countries involved, which go well beyond the tenure of anyone in the White House,” she said.
Meanwhile, Trump distanced himself from Guilfoyle after he asked her to resign amid accusations she solicited donors to pay her personal bills, among other allegations. (She vigorously denied these claims).
The president has downplayed his relationship with her, although she was once engaged to his Donald Jr. “She, I guess, dated my son a long time ago,” he said at a press briefing this week. “But she went to Greece. She was doing a good job, but we didn’t like what we were reading.”
We heard that Guilfoyle was looking for a “rich European husband.”
