Decorated San Francisco police officer and her daughter killed by her husband in suspected murder-suicide
The San Francisco Police Department was in mourning Tuesday after a pioneering police officer and her husband, who had also worked for the department, were found dead along with their daughter in what investigators are calling a “suspected double murder suicide.”
Retired sergeant. Kevin Mannix, 68, fatally shot his wife, Ann Mannix, 64, a retired chief deputy, and their 24-year-old daughter, Katherine Elizabeth Mannix, around 5 p.m. Sunday before turning the gun on himself, the Marin County Sheriff’s Office said.
Police found their bodies after going to a home in a neighborhood just north of the city following a 911 call from a person “who safely left the residence.”
Investigators have not revealed a motive for the chaos and autopsies were scheduled for Tuesday for all three people.
Meanwhile, San Francisco police were trying to absorb the loss.
“The tragic loss of retired Deputy Chief Ann Mannix, her daughter Katie, and retired Sergeant Kevin Mannix in a suspected murder-suicide has left our entire SFPD family in shock,” the San Francisco Police Officers Association said in a statement posted online. “There are no words that can fully capture the depth of this tragedy, nor simple answers to the painful questions we all ask ourselves. »
Kevin Mannix worked for the SFPD for 27 years before retiring from the department in 2018 with the rank of sergeant, according to the department.
But it was his wife who had the greatest impact on the department.
A fourth-generation San Franciscan with several parents who had previously worked as police officers, Ann Mannix joined the SFPD in 1986, a little more than a decade after it began hiring women as patrol officers, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
Ann Mannix has risen steadily through the ranks, rising from lieutenant in 2003 to commander in 2015 and deputy chief in 2018.
Before retiring in 2021, she led the field operations and special operations offices, police said in a statement. And she was the first woman to be part of and then lead the SWAT team.
