Deloitte used automation for Australian grant contract worth $2.2 million
CANBERRA — Deloitte has been awarded A$2.2 million to administer grants for childcare staff development, despite a government policy specifying it is essential work that should normally be done by civil servants.
Although Deloitte was praised by an independent review for its use of “automation” to fulfill the contract, the Australian Greens and the Community and Public Sector Union, affiliated with the ruling Australian Labor Party, have expressed concerns that the contract shows the Albanian government has failed to wean itself from costly and unnecessary outsourcing.
Work campaigned on a platform of reducing reliance on external contractors and consultantswhich it implemented with new rules in 2024 defining program implementation and grant management as core work that should be brought back in-house as a priority.
In a series of contracts, Deloitte received a total of $2.2 million to administer a $72 million grant program for the child care sector, including paid placement and professional development grants. The agreement was signed in May 2024, then expanded in December 2024 and June 2025, extending the contract until September 2027 or 2029 at the latest.
