Delta and Air Canada planes involved in collision on LAX runway
Two planes collided on the runway at Los Angeles International Airport Tuesday morning.
Delta Air Lines Flight 7 was taxiing for departure when the tip of its left wing struck the horizontal stabilizer of Air Canada Flight 875 at LAX.
“The Air Canada flight was being towed when it stopped short of its gate,” the Federal Aviation Administration said.
Jayson Lowe, CEO of Ascendant Financial Inc., was on another flight that had just landed at LAX when the collision occurred.
“I was looking out the window as we taxied to our arrival gate and a Delta A350 managed to hit a parked Air Canada plane. A parked plane. I can’t stress this enough,” Lowe wrote in a social media post.
He added that “someone in that Delta cockpit lost spatial awareness in the vicinity of an object roughly the size of a condo building with wings.”
LAX traffic experiences gate and taxi delays of 15 minutes or less, while arriving traffic experiences in-flight delays of 15 minutes or less. It remains unclear whether these delays are directly caused by the collision.
According to FlightAware, a total of 26 flights from LAX Airport were delayed as of 1 p.m. Tuesday, while two were canceled.
