Detroit Lions star Jack Campbell rushed to the hospital after a tackle left him immobile on the field.
Detroit Lions linebacker Jack Campbell was rushed to the hospital Sunday after a tackle left the standout defender facedown and immobile on the Ford Field turf.
The serious injury cast a pall over the Detroit locker room as players interrupted their celebration of a dramatic 19-15 victory over their division rivals, the Minnesota Vikings.
Coach Dan Campbell, who is no relation to the star linebacker, shouted gleefully to his players before transferring the postgame address to their injured teammate.
“I don’t have any more information on Jack,” he told the players. “We don’t know anything else at this point. So here’s what I want to do: We’re going to get on our knees, I want to pray for Jack. Let’s keep him in our thoughts and prayers.”
On the first play of the fourth quarter, Vikings quarterback Kyler Murray connected with TJ Hockenson for a 10-yard gain with Campbell and teammate Eric O’Neill bringing down the Minnesota tight end in what appeared to be a routine tackle.
But Campbell immediately got down on his stomach, face down, and didn’t move as medical personnel rushed onto the field. The linebacker was strapped to a medical cart and driven away.
Campbell showed good form, with his head held high, in making this tackle within the rules. But it appears Campbell’s head and neck may have been pushed backward when his helmet made contact with Hockenson’s left hip.
“Jack Campbell is resting and will remain at a local hospital this evening for continued evaluation and monitoring,” the Lions posted on social media Sunday after the game. “The team will provide further updates as we have them.”
