Warner Bros. is asking moviegoers to “decide for themselves” with a new ad for Tom Cruise’s “Digger” that boasts both negative and positive reactions.
“Masterpiece” and “Unpleasant” are mentioned in the same image in the new trailer, which also alternates between the words “Brilliant” and “Baffling” as well as “Magnificent” and “Insufferable.” These quotes come from film influencers who screened the film in advance and posted their reactions after the social embargo was lifted on September 22.
“Same movie, different truth,” reads the publicity for “Digger,” which stars Cruise as an oil tycoon whose drilling triggers a climate crisis. The film, from director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, marks Cruise’s first non-action hero role in nearly a decade.
Warner Bros. released the new ad an hour before the review embargo, when film critics were allowed to publish their reviews. The “decide for yourself” campaign was perhaps an attempt to get ahead of the critics, who were, on the whole, much less generous than the first wave of social media pundits.
VarietyOwen Gleiberman’s Owen Gleiberman called the film “so full of itself” in his review, writing, “The film cost more than $125 million to make, and that figure is not only too high to probably justify; it’s a testament to the filmmakers’ arrogance – to the assumption that many of us will sit through this lumbering, absurd lecture. »
Vulture’s Bilge Ebiri wrote in his review: “‘Digger’ is a torturous experience, sometimes deliberately, often unintentionally.” And IndieWire’s David Ehrlich called it a “surreal dud,” giving the film a C+ rating. (“Digger” currently has a 52% review score on Rotten Tomatoes.)
Of course, these are just critics’ opinions, so for those waiting to decide for themselves, “Digger” hits theaters on October 2.
