Debora Cahn, the showrunner of “The Diplomat,” knew that Season 4 had to mix things up for Kate Wyler (Keri Russell), leading her to kill off one of the show’s most important characters. Serving as the US Ambassador to the UK since season 1, Kate has built relationships with many British government officials beyond the Prime Minister, including Foreign Minister Austin Dennison (David Gyasi).

Season 4 Episode 3 unexpectedly reveals that Kate’s close ally and brief romantic fling died in a helicopter crash in India. Dennison’s off-screen disappearance came out of nowhere for Kate, Hal (Rufus Sewell) and then-Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge (Rory Kinnear), although Cahn revealed that writing the character of “The Diplomat” had a greater purpose than to shock.

Speaking to TV Insider, the series creator explained that she felt Dennison’s death was necessary to demonstrate the constant shift in government roles, forcing Kate to interact with new people over the course of the story. “The basic nature of what it means to be in this kind of job, you get a new position every three years, you’re in a different country and you’re starting from scratch, or you’re there for 10 minutes, and the government changes, and there’s a whole new group of characters, and you have no idea what you’re dealing with, and you have no relationships and no way of interpreting the subtext of a conversation,” Cahn said. “It just felt like we had to put him through that.”

How Keri Russell Reacted to Dennison’s Death in The Diplomat Season 4

Kate and Dennison frequently discussed foreign affairs during the first three seasons of “The Diplomat,” but their tender friendship had a strong impact on both characters. Although Kate was completely stunned and furiously distracted upon hearing the news of his death, it was clearly a crushing loss for the ambassador.

Keri Russell shared her perspective on Kate’s mental state regarding Dennison in a recent interview with Deadline. “When you’re on duty, but traveling, everything is really heightened,” she said. “So the bonds that you form when you’re away from home, away from the distractions of everyday life, from the people that you meet, are extraordinarily deep and passionate, and I think that character for Kate is really crucial. So losing him is monumental, but I think also realistic for those worlds.”

Season 4 of “The Diplomat” features many more surprises, including the resignation of Prime Minister Trowbridge following Dennison’s death. With Kate and Hal expected to take on new roles after leaving President Grace Penn’s (Allison Janney) administration in the Season 4 finale, the potential for drama and political upheaval is seemingly endless if Netflix moves forward with Season 5 of “The Diplomat.”
