Finding good Discord servers that match your interests can be difficult, unless you browse Discord’s own database or receive an invitation to a server.
The popular messaging and chat service is looking to solve this problem with an obvious but important change in the platform. Discord will now make public servers visible through Google Search.
Tuesday, Discord announcement that starting November 16, 2026, all discoverable servers will receive a server web page. These public server web pages will include summaries of discussions taking place on that public server. Additionally, starting in mid-December, some messages from these servers will be made publicly available on the server’s web page. Visitors will not need to join the server or even have a Discord account to view these messages.
Discord now verifies your age based on your activity and other factors
On Discord, users can join public servers or private servers, which require an invitation. Public servers can also be discoverable servers, meaning they are listed in Discord’s searchable database of 63,000 discoverable servers, which anyone can join.
However, Discover servers, even Discoverable servers, are not listed in Google Search because the servers do not have a public web page that Google can index. Although public servers are open to everyone, users must Join their Discord account to view messages and discussions.
Crushable speed of light
There are many reasons why Discord is making this change. In its announcement, the company explained how it would help some of its core user types – independent game developers, fandoms and content creators – grow their communities and more easily distribute their work.
Other community platforms like Reddit have long benefited from search engine traffic, as discussions on the platform tend to rank highly for various user search queries on Google. Discord could also benefit from this.
However, Discord appears to be aware that some users of the platform have long valued its stance on privacy. The company announced that server owners and users of a server can opt out of having their content searchable by search engines.
Discord server admins can disable specific channels starting today, before anything goes live on November 16, 2026. Admins can go to Server Settings > Web Presence on their public server and choose which channels to make viewable. Administrators can unsubscribe from each channel on their server. However, if an administrator does not opt out, all public channels will be added to the server’s web page when it goes live next month. Administrators can also choose to disable channel summaries on their server’s web page.
Additionally, users can opt out of having their messages displayed on the server’s web page. Discord users can simply go to User Settings, then Data & Privacy, and then change their channel message settings. Users cannot opt out of having their posts used in channel summaries on server web pages. However, usernames and avatars will not be displayed alongside posts on these public server web pages.
Private servers and DMs will remain completely private on Discord. Users do not need to change settings for these features.
