Offering discounts if users bundle their streaming subscription with another subscription, such as for home internet or mobile service, would help streaming companies reduce cancellations. Streaming services can get more value from this strategy if they target younger audiences by offering more packages with services such as music, gaming or food delivery services.
“[C]urrent bundles offered by media companies are at risk of missing the mark as younger subscribers shift to broader cross-category ecosystems. Simply put: Bundles have become mainstream, but they still need to keep pace with consumer expectations that have become increasingly personal,” Deloitte said in a blog post in August.
Streaming services can also better help subscribers discover content, which could help services drive subscriptions. In Gracenote’s State of Play 2025 survey of 3,000 “consumers” in the United States, Brazil, France, Germany, Mexico and the United Kingdom, 49% of respondents said they were “willing to cancel a service due to difficulty finding what to watch.”
Some services already leverage generative AI chatbots and other technologies to help users find new content. However, the challenge of creating reliable content discovery that people love to use extends beyond streaming services, including to smart TV operating system owners, marketers and AI companies.
As streaming mergers continue, customers are likely to see higher prices and less diversity in ownership of countless beloved shows, movies, games, books and franchises.
Today, totally boycotting Disney means boycotting many streaming services, networks, franchises, and theme parks. With more streaming services united, it will become harder to protest and avoid services that make unpleasant decisions, like raising prices or canceling a show because of the opinions expressed by the host.
