Disneyland flooded by sudden downpour as rides closed and fireworks canceled
Disneyland was treated to a real water ride Friday night when a sudden downpour turned the happiest place on earth into a soggy mess, flooding walkways, flooding popular lands and disrupting outdoor attractions.
An intense 15-minute downpour over Anaheim submerged parts of the California theme park, sending water spilling onto walking paths and forcing visitors to scramble to keep their shoes dry.
The National Weather Service had forecast regional rainfall totals of about 25 millimeters in Southern California on Friday, but the sudden deluge caught some park visitors off-guard as storm drains struggled to keep up.
Images circulating online showed ankle-deep floodwaters outside Frontierland’s Pioneer Shooting and Trade Expo, with stranded tourists making their way along the gardens and climbing onto benches to avoid rising waters.
“The rivers of America just expanded into Frontierland,” one Disneyland California visitor commented on Instagram.
Videos also captured puddles of standing water in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and around the Haunted Mansion, as frustrated guests saw their outing in the park turn into a soggy chore.
“My weather app showed no rain for 6 hours. 45 minutes later it showed heavy rain in 18 minutes. Then it said ‘flash flood warning’! Totally out of nowhere,” one visitor posted on Instagram.

Video of another guest’s downpour went viral, capturing the frustration of getting caught without rain gear.
“Brother, I arrived at Disneyland on the wrong day, it wasn’t supposed to rain today. Bro, I didn’t even have a hoodie or an umbrella, my feet were soaked and I was all wet bro.”
In Fantasyland, stormwater backed up between Sleeping Beauty Castle and the Matterhorn bobsleighs has transformed pedestrian paths into streams. Protective canopies over the outdoor dining centers overflowed under the weight, pouring cascades of water directly onto the guest seats below.
Disneyland Cast Members sprang into action with brooms and squeegees, clearing clogged drains and debris as water threatened to spread further into the park.
“A brave Cast Member is unblocking the drain as we speak,” documented a visitor from a sheltered landing. “Our dry shoes, our socks, and the future of Frontierland are in your hands.”
The water problems quickly spread beyond the turnstiles to the station’s main transportation hubs. Standing water has accumulated in the tram terminals in the Mickey & Friends and Pixar Pals parking lots, making nighttime departures difficult for families with strollers.
“I barely got to the car when the crazy downpour happened,” one Disneyland visitor commented on Instagram.
Disneyland management temporarily suspended outdoor rides at the park as lightning was detected in Orange County, while the evening’s fireworks display was also canceled due to high winds, rainy weather and the risk of lightning.
Operations crews worked late into the night to clear debris and pump out standing water, aiming to get the station back into shape for weekend crowds.
