Donald Trump says war in Iran ‘will end very soon’
US President Donald Trump says the war in Iran “will end very soon” as voters consider their options ahead of midterm elections taking place amid economic uncertainty and ongoing global conflict.
Speaking to reporters Wednesday evening, Trump said: “The war in Iran is going to end very soon. It’s going to end very soon, whenever I want it to end, it’s going to end.” He added that Iran would “never have a nuclear weapon” and that oil prices would “fall like a rock.”
The US president has tried in recent weeks to refocus his attention on Ukraine and suggested that his attacks on Russian refineries were responsible for rising fuel prices. His new message on Iran suggests that the price of everyday goods – and gas by the tank – has an impact on elections.
Voting groups that are key to winning votes in the midterms are increasingly disillusioned with the economy, according to an exclusive Harris poll for the Guardian. Three in four Americans now worry about the risk of recession.
Elsewhere:
James Talarico, Texas’ Democratic Senate candidate, was grilled at a town hall by undecided voters on a range of questions ranging from Gaza to his faith. He emphasized his aspiration to put residents above party allegiance.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he feels “betrayed” by the United States after Ukraine’s military access to Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite was restricted. The US president denied that the administration had reduced intelligence sharing, but Musk suggested on X that the US government was behind the restrictions.
Trump’s new press secretary, Katie Zacharia, is facing scrutiny over her claims that she is a lawyer. Zacharia clarified some questions but the big question remains: has she already passed the bar?

Unilateral efforts by the White House to broker an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine failed when Moscow sent a record swarm of drones overnight to attack infrastructure in central Ukraine and kyiv appeared to resume strikes on Russian oil refineries – despite warnings from Donald Trump.
Moscow accused Ukraine of launching its first strike against a Russian oil refinery in the Ryazan region since Trump abruptly declared an “energy ceasefire” that neither Russia nor Ukraine said they had agreed to. Trump demanded that Volodymyr Zelensky stop attacking Russian oil refineries, saying it was behind the global rise in the price of diesel fuel.
Zelensky said Wednesday he would resume strikes on Russian oil refineries after stopping those attacks, to show Ukraine was ready to enter into peace talks. “The blockade (on attacks on refineries) is lifted. We are done with it,” he told the Financial Times. He also called the gap in US intelligence sharing “dangerous”.
Footage from Ryazan showed flames at the refinery, which regional officials said had been targeted by 69 drones and four Flamingo cruise missiles. Debris from a drone hit by anti-aircraft fire hit the refinery and sparked the fire, the ministry said.
In Ukraine, more than 360 Russian drones targeted Kirovohrad, a central region less hard-hit than others closer to Russia, in attacks that left three dead and six injured.
