DSA-backed challenger ousts Jimmy Gomez
Angela Gonzales-Torres ousted Rep. Jimmy Gomez capitalizing on a House ethics investigation into the outgoing president to take a seat in the Los Angeles House.
Gonzalez-Torres is the first in a long line of progressives to successfully challenge the Democrat from his left. She criticized him for his support of groups supporting Israel and the tech industry and for an allegation of sexual assault, which he denied.
The result is a victory for Democratic Socialists of America, which supported Gonzales-Torres alongside the Working Families Party and other left-wing groups. It’s a sudden change of fortune for Gomez who beat Gonzalez-Torres by more than 15 points in the first two California primaries.
CNN first reported On the day California’s June primary was held, the House Ethics Committee was investigating Gomez. In August, lawyers for a woman who did not give her name publicly said she told the committee that Gomez had sexually assaulted her . Gomez admitted “mistakes outside of my marriage” but said all interactions were consensual.
