DSA Co-Chair Dismisses White House’s $49 Trillion Socialist Policy Estimate as ‘Made Up’
DSA National Co-Chair: “The voters have spoken – they want change”
Democratic Socialists of America Co-Chair Megan Romer joins Fox News anchor Martha MacCallum to defend the DSA platform and explain next steps for socialist candidates who won their midterm elections on “The Story.” Romer discusses what these victories mean for the socialist movement, the issues that drove support for DSA-backed candidates, and how these newly elected officials plan to advance their agenda.

Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) national co-chair Megan Romer was pressed on Fox News about how much socialist policies would cost American taxpayers after DSA-backed candidates made significant gains in the midterm elections.
The White House Council of Economic Advisers (CEA) estimated that DSA’s policy proposals, including Medicare for All and student debt cancellation, would cost taxpayers $49 trillion. Romer, who said the group’s new lawmakers would prioritize affordability, called the sky-high price tag “outrageous,” calling it a “made-up number.”
“The White House, which doesn’t like us very much, managed to come up with calculations that made us look bad,” Romer said on “The Story.” “But we don’t agree with these numbers.”

The CEA report estimates that the DSA policy wish list will cost approximately $355,000 per American household over the next decade.
After rejecting the administration’s numbers, Romer declined to offer her own independent estimate when Fox News anchor Martha MacCallum pressed her, saying the cost “depends.”
DSA-SUPPORTED CANDIDATES WIN PRIMARIES AND THEIR VISION OF AMERICA IS VERY DIFFERENT
“There is no precise number because it depends on what parts we can build in the meantime,” the DSA chief said. “So it’s about growing programs and then eliminating old, bad programs, and that number is going to change as we adopt various measures.”
“I’m not going to give you a precise number. That’s not why I’m here,” she continued. “What I’m here to do is talk about how we can collectively decide democratically how we want our money to be spent.”

Romer criticized the scale of U.S. military spending, arguing that federal resources devoted to overseas military operations would be better redirected to DSA policy priorities, including amnesty for illegal immigrants and abolition of the Senate.
“We do not believe in the need to have 800 U.S. military bases around the world,” Romer said. “That’s an insane amount of money to spend…Our military spending is outrageous, and most of that money goes to defense contractors. It enriches a handful of billionaires.”
SEN. DEB FISCHER: THE LEFT’S WAR AGAINST THE SENATE AND SUPREME COURT PUTS OUR REPUBLIC AT RISK
MacCallum hit back at his claims about excessive military spending, saying the U.S. defense budget is only $961 billion, compared to an estimate of $47 trillion for DSA policies to fund.

In a July interview with Fox News, Romer maintained his positions to abolish the Senate, replace the presidency and the Supreme Court, and eradicate Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). She also defended wanting to abolish borders and grant amnesty to illegal immigrants in the United States.
“We agree that providing health care to everyone will cost money, but it will cost less money than we are currently spending on the military and on these illegal wars,” Romer said Wednesday.
