Eagles announce Jalen Hurts diagnosed with blood clots in lungs, reportedly out for 2026 season
After the Philadelphia Eagles officially placed Jalen Hurts on injured reserve over the weekend, the team and his agent released a joint statement on his condition Monday, saying the quarterback suffered from deep vein thrombosis as well as a bilateral pulmonary embolism.
While the team was aware and announced the blood clot in Hurts’ leg, the bilateral pulmonary embolism is a new development for the quarterback. A bilateral pulmonary embolism involves multiple blood clots in the lungs.

As a result of this diagnosis, Hurts will be placed on blood thinners and will not be able to play football until he is fully recovered. Hurts’ prognosis is “very good” and he is expected to make a “full recovery,” according to the joint statement.
“Over the past several days, Jalen Hurts has received comprehensive medical evaluations from expert physicians. In the interest of transparency, we are providing additional information regarding the diagnosis and treatment plan related to his condition.
“Jalen was initially diagnosed by specialists in London with superficial vein thrombosis of the left calf. After further testing and monitoring, the current diagnosis is deep vein thrombosis, as well as bilateral pulmonary embolism. He is clinically stable and has no significant functional limitations. His treatment should only involve anticoagulation (i.e. “blood thinners”). During this period, he will not be allowed to participate in any contact activities, including including football.
“Jalen’s progress is very good and we expect a full recovery. We anticipate that he will have the opportunity to return to contact football activities when he is no longer taking blood thinners. In the meantime, he will remain active with the team and continue to condition. Most importantly, we anticipate that he will have no long-term effects.
“We are thinking of Jalen and looking forward to a strong recovery.”
While the statement did not offer a timeline for Hurts’ recovery, multiple reports suggest he will miss at least three months, essentially the entire 2026 NFL season.
The Eagles initially discovered a blood clot in Hurts’ leg before the team’s Week 5 game in London. At the time, the team determined Hurts could compete. He threw for 220 yards and scored in the 19-17 loss.
Hurts was able to practice without restrictions on Wednesday, but a follow-up ultrasound revealed “movement in the small blood clot.” Because of this, Hurts was ruled out in Week 6.

With Hurts sidelined, the Eagles turned to Tanner McKee in Week 6. McKee went 26 of 45 with 215 yards and a passing touchdown in the team’s 25–14 loss to the Carolina Panthers in his third NFL start.
