Eagles offense sputters with 68 net passing yards, 0-12 on third down vs. Rams
The boos flew early and often in Philadelphia on Sunday, thanks to an offense that couldn’t get off the ground.
The final tally from Sunday’s loss to the Rams: 172 total yards, 68 net passing yards and 0 of 12 on third down.
Over the past two games, the Eagles have converted just two of 21 third-down opportunities.
After the loss to Los Angeles, Eagles coach Nick Sirianni was asked if the problems were the result of execution, play or scheme.
“Obviously, everyone contributed to this,” Sirianni told reporters. “Everybody. So, there are execution errors, there are coaching errors. Everybody contributes to it. It’s an ultimate team game. You can’t keep drives going and do the things you want to do. Some of our problems offensively came from the fact that we were behind, but it wasn’t quite the same case today where we were on second and long and all these different things. We couldn’t convert on third down for a few different reasons. Again, there’s always a lot of stuff.”
Injuries have something to do with it. The Eagles were without wide receiver Devonta Smith and tight end Dallas Goedert. Right tackle Lane Johnson was a late scratch. Running back Saquon Barkley injured his hamstring on his only carry of the game.
Quarterback Jalen Hurts didn’t blame injuries. Or play call. Or a plan.
“Poor execution,” he said of the offensive effort, particularly in the second half. “Poor execution. Yeah, poor execution.”
He was then asked what he meant by “poor execution”.
“It’s just you finding your flow collectively as a unit,” Hurts said. “I think it’s about finding a rhythm, finding a rhythm as a unit, as a group, and going out there and executing at a higher level. We didn’t do that today.”
The next opportunity to do so will be in six days, in London. Against the Jaguars 3-1.
Even though the season is not yet on the brink, it is clear that the Eagles are not the team they have been in recent seasons. They are currently not dominant. They are currently not elite. They have the Panthers and Cowboys after the England trip, followed by the Commanders and Giants.
The Eagles need to win at least three of the next five games before their Week 10 bye. If they finish the first nine games at 4-5, 3-6 or 2-7, it could be very difficult to get back into the playoffs.
Even if they do, the 2026 Eagles don’t look like a team capable of climbing the playoff tree.
