The first reactions to the upcoming Street Fighter movie are in, and critics seem divided on the live-action adaptation of the popular fighting game franchise.
The film, which stars WWE stars Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns, drew praise for its over-the-top action and playful approach, although some early viewers felt the film failed to deliver on its promises.
Several reactions described the film as a wild and entertaining adventure that embraces the franchise’s larger-than-life characters and fighting style. Others were less impressed, suggesting that the film’s approach did not always result in an effective cinematic experience.
Early reactions have drawn attention to the mix of martial arts action, video game-inspired spectacle and a cast featuring familiar faces from professional wrestling. Rhodes and Reigns are among the WWE names appearing in the project, adding another major entertainment venture to their respective careers.
With early reactions now circulating online, Street Fighter is sparking discussion among moviegoers and wrestling fans ahead of its theatrical release.
Early Street Fighter Reactions Rate Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns’ Action Film
Chris Killian of ComicBook offered one of the most colorful descriptions of the film, comparing it to the 1988 martial arts film Bloodsport while highlighting its over-the-top action and humor.
“Street Fighter is like Bloodsport on steroids for horses,” Killian wrote. He also praised the film’s comedic approach, highlighting how it pays homage to the excesses of 1980s action films while mocking the toxic masculinity associated with the genre.
Brandon Davis also shared a positive reaction, describing the film as a nostalgic throwback combining familiar visual elements with humor and a strong cast. He called it “a silly, fun, fearless good time.”
However, initial reactions have not been universally positive. Tessa Smith of Mama’s Geeky said that the film ultimately fell flat, criticizing its dialogue and jokes despite praising the cast’s appearance. Another reviewer, AxelTalksFilm, pointed out an underdeveloped premise despite the potential in the performances and action.
The film follows Ryu and Ken Masters as Chun-Li recruits them for the upcoming World Warrior tournament. A murderous conspiracy is unfolding alongside the competition, bringing together an ensemble that includes Andrew Koji, Noah Centineo, Callina Liang, Jason Momoa, 50 Cent, Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns.
