Musk blasted Gibney and his lawyer threatened legal action over the film
Justine Wilson, Elon Musk’s first wife, is speaking out about the Tesla and SpaceX chief’s very public rift with their daughter Vivian Jenna Wilson, who is transgender.
Justine married Musk in 2000, divorced in 2008, and is one of the key interview subjects in Alex Gibney’s new documentary, Muskwhich is now open in select theaters and will be released nationwide on October 16.
Gibney, an Oscar-winning documentarian, was heavily criticized by Musk ahead of the release of his new film, with a lawyer for Musk threatening legal action over what he saw as factual distortions.
The approximately four-hour film is a deep dive into the career and personal life of the world’s richest man. In it, Justine, an author and mother of six of Musk’s children (one of whom died in infancy), claims that her difficult relationship with Vivian dates back to when she was young.
“She is extremely determined,” says Justine in Musk of the 22-year-old model and activist. “Elon and I had five children and the one who was the most overtly defiant was Jenna (Vivian’s middle name).”
Justine says in the doc that when Vivian was 6, Elon told her, “In this world, there are winners and losers. Do you want to be a winner or do you want to be a loser?”
“The subtext was, ‘If you don’t follow me and do what I say, you’ll be a loser,'” Justine adds.
Musk himself did not participate in Gibney’s film and publicly ridiculed it as a “hit piece.” Instead – unusually – Gibney recreated a version of himself using his past statements.
He and Vivian have exchanged very public criticism of each other in recent years, with Musk attacking Vivian’s trans identity.

While discussing her relationship with their daughter, Justine speaks in Gibney’s doc about the “pain” Vivian felt after Musk posted on X (which he has owned since 2022) that he lost her to the “awakened mind virus.”
“Elon was telling her, by revealing it to the world, what this point of view really was,” explains Justine. “And Elon never tried to fix things, it’s not in his nature.”
“If a relationship breaks up, then it breaks up,” Justine says of Musk’s view.
Justine says Musk treated Vivian’s transition like the “death of a child.”
“I thought, ‘We’ve actually experienced the death of a real child,'” Justine recalled, referring to her first son, Nevada, who was killed at 10 weeks old by sudden infant death syndrome in 2002. “‘And what’s really happening here is that this is a child growing up.’ “
Justine says Musk told her to tell Vivian that “I will always love her” — then cut off her health insurance the next day, after Vivian came out as trans.
More broadly, Justine reflected on what her ex might have been dealing with with their daughter. “If you do your job well as a parent, you are displaced by their life, which is no longer yours. It involves a lot of emotions,” she says.

Vivian, a model and activist who dropped her father’s famous last name in 2022, recently made her rift with her father over artificial intelligence clear during an interview with PEOPLE in September.
“Art is emotion through expression,” she said while promoting Spanish fashion brand Desigual’s fall 2026 campaign titled “Born to Disobey.”
