Elon Musk limits Grok Bot limits due to ‘unsustainable’ costs
Over Halloween weekend, some Grok Bot users woke up to something particularly scary: Their weekly usage limits were unexpectedly exceeded, even though they hadn’t been using SpaceX’s agentic AI overnight. Some users have reported on X that their usage has increased from 50% to 100%.
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk confirmed in an X article on Sunday that this was not a problem.
“The cost of Grok Bot’s service was unsustainable relative to revenue,” he wrote in response to a user question. He didn’t address the issue in his main feed, but continued to boast that Grok Bot can help you buy gifts for your family.
Grok Bot has been positioned as a success story for new company SpaceX, which said in a filing last month that AI now accounts for 52% of the company’s revenue. Its renamed “Super Intelligence” division actually made a profit of $431 million, which is a rarity in the AI industry. Its profit would have been higher without the $1.2 billion in one-time costs related to the Cursor acquisition. Musk recently called Grok Bot “the fastest growing product I’ve ever seen in my life.”
Musk has not yet explained how subscriber usage limits will be affected in the future.
