Emmy Awards Leave TV Broadcasting to Prime Video in Six-Year Deal

The Emmy Awards will let their long-running broadcast network rotate for Amazon Prime Video in 2027 as part of an exclusive six-year global streaming deal, the e-commerce giant and the Television Academy announced Tuesday.

Under the terms of the agreement, Prime Video will stream the annual best-in-TV awards free of charge to all audiences, including non-subscribers, in more than 240 countries and territories.

Prime Video’s rights to the Emmys will begin with the 2027 ceremony. NBC, owned by Comcastbroadcast the 2026 ceremony on September 14.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

In the release, Prime Video was named the “permanent home” of the Emmys, contrary to the rotation agreement in place years ago.

The change ends the traditional wheel-deal setup for broadcasting the awards, where ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox took turns hosting the Emmys each year. The system has been in place since at least 1994, with the last eight-year contract expiring this year.

“Television has never been more global, and the Emmys should be a celebration the world can share,” Cris Abrego, president of the Television Academy, said in a statement.

“Having a dedicated home with Prime Video allows us to build on this legacy with unprecedented global reach and a broader commitment to the Television Academy and our mission throughout the year,” he said.

The decision to move the 70-plus awards show to streaming reflects a broader trend in a changing media landscape as Americans continue to abandon broadcast and cable television in favor of subscriptions to streaming services. Streaming services have moved further into live events in recent years, securing entertainment and sports rights alongside broadcast networks, and even securing rights that were previously exclusive to the networks.

In December 2025, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced an agreement with The alphabet YouTube and YouTube TV for Oscar media rights, succeeding ABC in 2029. Netflix has been exclusively broadcasting the SAG Awards since 2024.
