Eric Deters files defamation suit against Kimberly Guilfoyle
Eric Deters, the Republican donor who accused Kimberly Guilfoyle of asking him to wire him $100,000 to pay his American Express bill in exchange for helping the Trump administration before his Senate confirmation hearing, has filed a defamation suit against Guilfoyle and his legal team.
Guilfoyle was expelled from his post as ambassador to Greece earlier this week, announcing his resignation on Tuesday. Guilfoyle’s team publicly disputed the authenticity of SMS Deterrence shared with several media outlets, including CBS News.
Deters filed the lawsuit Thursday in Kentucky state court.
Deters said Guilfoyle’s legal team released a statement to the Wall Street Journal saying Deters owed Guilfoyle money and failed to fulfill his obligations. The Journal published part of his lawyer’s statement, which said Guilfoyle “owed a balance for traveling and supporting these patriotic events,” which Deters denies.
“Kim Guilfoyle and her attorneys have asserted that my allegations are false and that they will vigorously defend them,” Deters wrote in a statement accompanying her lawsuit. “Now they can in Kentucky.”
CBS News has contacted the attorneys named in the lawsuit – Jesse Binnall and David M. Schwartz – for comment.
