Jim Jordan launches criminal proceedings against Jack Smith

Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, discusses issuing a criminal referral against former special counsel Jack Smith over perjury allegations before Congress. Jordan claims Smith “apparently made willfully and intentionally false statements” under oath regarding his team’s access to text messages from 44 lawmakers during investigations into President Donald Trump.

Politicians from both parties have had a rough week, as slip-ups and unpopular messages have sent them floods of unwanted attention.

The biggest gaffe this week was Missouri Republican Sen. Eric Schmitt’s botched attempt to accuse former special counsel Jack Smith of perjury during Tuesday’s Senate testimony — a basketball mix-up that was revealed when cameras caught the stunned reaction of Alabama Republican Sen. Katie Britt, seated next to him.

Britt sat next to Schmitt as he pressed Smith on whether he attended an Atlanta Hawks game on Feb. 3, 2024, pointing to text messages that he said showed Smith was there. When Smith denied attending the NBA game, Schmitt accused him of lying under oath. Schmitt had apparently confused references to the Iowa Hawkeyes with the Atlanta Hawks, unaware that Smith had attended the Iowa-Maryland women’s college basketball game that evening rather than the NBA game in Atlanta.

As the situation unfolded and Schmitt’s mistake became evident, a pool camera zoomed in on Britt’s face, revealing his shocked expression.

“Senator Katie Britt – herself a former congresswoman – knew she was watching a legendary staff get screwed,” wrote an MSNOW reporter. “The kind of crap the interns will hear as a warning on their first day on the job, June 1, 2047.”

“(Britt) opposes abortion and yet Schmitt just ruined her chances for 2028 vice president on live TV,” one liberal YouTuber joked.

Schmitt’s exchange quickly became one of the most viral moments of Smith’s hearing, drowning out much of the rest of the day’s events.

The Missouri senator attempted to defuse tensions by responding ironically to the controversy.

“Who knew Jack Smith was a Caitlin Clark fan?” Schmitt posted to X shortly after the hearing ended, referencing the fact that Clark was playing for Iowa in the game Smith attended.

His post sparked a new wave of negative responses.

“Anyone with a modicum of decency would immediately apologize and then impose some accountability for the staff’s remarkably sloppy work,” wrote New York Times columnist David French. “He was trying to set up a perjury trap with false information. Pitiful.”

“When I talk about how the quality of congressional staff was much higher, I feel like I’m 70 years old…but that’s a good example,” said one former congressman. “No one who worked for a number of Republican senators in 2015 would have ever allowed this in a million years.”

Schmitt wasn’t the only politician to draw ire from the Internet this week.

Maine Democratic Senate candidate Troy Jackson has come under fire from left-wing figures after posting a video of himself sipping boba tea and criticizing the wealthy interests supporting his Republican opponent.

JIM JORDAN SAYS HOUSE WEIGHS CRIMINAL DISMISSAL OF JACK SMITH FOR LYING TO CONGRESS

“The same people who ran Mallory McMorrow’s campaign are telling you to do this stupid shit,” left-wing podcaster Kyle Kulinski posted on

“Troy Jackson should win, but videos like this are pointless and grating,” liberal influencer Harry Sisson posted on X. “Please change that! No boba tea!”

In another gaffe earlier this week, Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., accidentally referred to himself as a “lifelong Republican” before immediately correcting himself.

Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, meanwhile, upset some conservatives with an ad depicting a fictional young white man on Medicaid named “Brad” as a gambler who chooses not to work. Some critics have accused Sanders of casting a white male character to avoid representing demographic groups they say receive government aid at higher rates. »
