Who is Ethan Klein?

Ethan Klein is one of those formidable content creators that you hear about but never really know what content he creates. His show, H3 Podcasthas 2.5 million subscribers on YouTube and 56 million likes on TikTok. It is a comedy (using that term as loosely as possible) and commentary show, created and hosted by Ethan and featuring a rotation of others, including Hila. Their most popular YouTube episodes are interviews with Shane Dawson, Post Malone and Steve-O.

What’s wrong with Hila?

Ethan and Hila have been married since 2012 and they do H3 together. Like many couples who post, they have heavily commodified their relationship for content, so we know a lot about their dynamic and family life. But earlier today, Hila posted a multi-slide Instagram post detailing how long her husband has been cheating on her. “I’m living in a nightmare that I can’t wake up from,” she wrote. “He was my safe place, my partner in marriage, parenting and business. My only family on this side of the world. How can I begin to make sense of that?”

It seems this Ethan character is unpopular.

Based on today’s unbridled joy, there’s a lot of schadenfreude surrounding Ethan’s suffering. In recent years, he has become even more defensive and argumentative than before, and much less willing to heed criticism or feedback. H3 has also changed, moving from a lighter comedy program to a platform for Ethan to chronicle his many feuds and lawsuits he’s in with other YouTubers. He was accused of harassing several female commenters online and filed a bogus copyright lawsuit against other streamers that he ended up losing. Since October 7, 2023, he has also become more uncompromising about his support for Israel, as has his wife.

So why aren’t people rallying around Hila?

Would you be excited about Lauren Sánchez and Jeff Bezos breaking up? Gun pointed at your head: do you choose a side or does that gun go off? These two suck, and while no one is happy to learn that Ethan is sleazy, Hila gets almost no sympathy from the audience. The two met during birthright trips to Israel and while Hila was serving in the Israel Defense Forces. The two have had several high-profile clashes over their pro-Israel stances (more on that in a minute), and Hila has already shown poor judgment by marrying Ethan in the first place. The internet isn’t particularly ready to feel bad for her, even though she’s now publicly cuckolded and the future of her business remains uncertain.

Who did he cheat with? That is to say: he found another person willing to have sex with him?

From 2021 to 2023, Piker and Ethan hosted a left-wing podcast together called Remains. It was a talk and interview show (you know how men like to hear themselves think out loud), but it went off the rails around October 7th. Piker and Ethan did an episode about the attacks, with Piker being pro-Palestinian and Ethan siding with Israel. They have been in a long-running argument ever since, and since Hila’s Instagram post, Piker has been casual online. “JUDGE ME BY MY ENEMIES,” he posted on X today.

Paytas also used to have a show with Ethan, called Enemiesfrom 2020 to 2021. Ethan and Paytas always seemed to be fighting — a well-balanced fight between two old internet faces — but she ultimately left the show because of her contract. She is also technically related to Hila and Ethan; her husband, Moses Hacmon, is Hila’s brother. They’ve been estranged for a few years after Ethan and Paytas broke up, although some Internet sleuths think that’s partly because Hacmon and Paytas have become more sympathetic toward Palestinians than Hila and the rest of the family would like.

In reality, this is much more about Israel and Palestine than I thought.
