Even anonymous stadium workers score against the Cowboys
As if Thursday’s 24-16 loss to a (formerly) winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers team — a loss that never really seemed as close as the final score seemed — wasn’t already bad enough for the Dallas Cowboys. Now they have to deal with everyone seeing a video of Dak Prescott heading to the locker room, fresh off losing at home to the aforementioned Bucs, taking offense to a worker inside the stadium calling his performance “embarrassing.” The word was so triggering that it forced Prescott to glare, maybe even a glare.
Later, during his press conference, where Prescott had to sit down and explain his team’s prime-time kicks, he was asked about the moment:
When he said it, I just looked at him, and at that moment he looked away, didn’t look, and when I turned my head back he said something else, so that’s the moment when as a man or person you feel free to say what you think. Just speak it. Don’t be discouraged by the reaction you will get. If you say it’s embarrassing, say so. If you tell me, tell me. Don’t come back. That’s all it was. I hate it when we talk about it, to be honest with you.
When asked if he would describe the loss as “embarrassing,” Prescott responded as usual: The NFL is any Sunday (or Thursday), and all these teams are full of professionals some sort of justification for why he couldn’t label it so forcefully. But he acknowledged the Cowboys ate a certain amount of crap: “That was a game we were supposed to have on paper…In this league, you have to win the games you’re supposed to win, and when a winless team walks into your stadium on a Thursday night, in prime time, yeah, we’re supposed to win that.”
Unfortunately for Prescott, “embarrassing” is the best word to describe this team right now. Not because they lost, not because they lost to the (formerly) winless Bucs, but because that’s really the only way to describe what their defense let Bucky Irving do to them. He totaled 165 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries. It’s embarrassing that this defense gave up 17 points in the third quarter alone to a team with an undrafted rookie in Jalon Daniels replacing its starting quarterback. It’s embarrassing that Prescott saw two of his tipped balls turn into picks, but it’s also embarrassing that Prescott had to throw the ball 42 times to make up for his defense.
Whoever the guy was in the stadium was right to call out what it was.
