Ex-Mossad chief: Iranian operations in 2025 are deliberately revealed to sow confusion in Tehran
When Mossad made the astonishing decision to release multiple real-time videos of its operatives acting against the Iranian regime in June 2025, one of the main reasons was to overwhelm and sow confusion within the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), former Mossad chief David Barnea revealed.
Leaked Sunday from comments he made to a closed-door audience at last Thursday’s Priority Summit.
On June 13, 2025, Mossad released sensational and rare video footage of its co-leading role with the Air Force in Israel’s pre-emptive strike against Iranian ballistic missiles and air defenses.
Three videos showed Mossad targeting ballistic missile targets, air defense targets, and general preparations for attacks (with the agents’ faces masked).
From the video’s perspective, it appears that Mossad used drones from Iran to attack various targets.
Iran previously accused Mossad of using drones to attack the Karaj facility in June 2021 as well as other operations.
Mossad drone warehouse used to sabotage Iran
It was later confirmed that Mossad had used an entire warehouse of drones to attack and sabotage Iran, in addition to assisting with large numbers of remotely operated vehicles attacking regime targets, and that a significant number of human operatives on the ground had also contributed to the assassinations.
Although much more information was quickly made public about the IDF’s actions, these videos gave readers a rare front-row, real-time seat into what were normally entirely clandestine operations that the Mossad did not even want to admit to.
Barnea told the Priority Summit that the video was deliberately released to trigger mass arrests and make it more difficult for the IRGC to identify real Israeli agents.
“One of the reasons we immediately released an official video on the morning of Operation Rising Lion, with the Mossad logo, was to protect the agents who were there,” Barnea said in a video shared by Yediot Ahronot and about which the Jerusalem Post confirmed the authenticity. “We wanted to make sure that they arrested so many people in Iran that they wouldn’t be able to tell the wheat from the chaff and that they would eventually release everyone,” adding that Iran had indeed released all the detainees.
IRGC arrested more than 20,000 people on second day of war
The former Mossad chief said the IRGC arrested 21,000 people on the second day of fighting.
“You have to imagine that when you arrest 21,000 people, even if you arrested one or two agents, you will eventually have to release them because everyone’s story will be the same: I was walking down the street, I was driving a car, they arrested me,” he said, emphasizing that the IRGC would have no way of knowing who was a real agent with such a large number of detainees.
Barnea added that many of those arrested or executed by the IRGC as “Mossad agents” had nothing to do with the agency.
Furthermore, he said that almost all Mossad agents were never arrested, and at the end of the June 2025 operation, he even publicly taunted the IRGC, issuing a statement: “We will continue to be there, as we have been.” »
His explanation could close the book on the unexplained mystery of why Mossad took the risk of broadcasting in real time some of the actions of its agents during the June 2025 operation.
In September 2025, the post office exclusively reported that dozens of Mossad women crossed into Iran and were on the ground carrying out various types of operations during Israeli attacks on Tehran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs in June 2025.
Although Mossad does not want to draw too much attention to a subgroup of potential spies, the post office The impression was that the Mossad women of 2025 were playing more spy roles of all kinds than their sisters of yesterday.
In this same September report, the post office noted that Barnea simultaneously sent hundreds of Mossad agents, or individuals led by agents, into operations in Iran. All the different staff groups were highly coordinated.
The intelligence chief led a project leading to a diverse spectrum of every operative type and background imaginable.
In addition to actual Israeli Mossad agents, the spy services have reached new levels in recruiting and training local dissident Iranian agents to act against the Ayatollahs’ regime, the post office reported at the time.
While the early 2026 war with Iran is seen by many as a mixed bag, the June 2025 war was considered the most successful Israeli operation of the last three years, along with the explosive beeps used against Hezbollah.
