Fans accuse Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds of breaking Deluxe Edition promise after revealing FF7 DLC: ‘I paid $100 for this shit, guess I learned my lesson’
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is a great racing game with a ton of post-launch support. Unfortunately, the balance between bombarding players with new content and how it was monetized hasn’t been as impressive. Sega recently announced a collaboration with Final Fantasy VII and the rest of its Year 2 DLC plans. The only problem is that fans who spent $100 for the Deluxe Edition will have to pay extra to access it.
The DLC roadmap for the game’s second year begins on November 3 and was previewed this weekend. It includes the following crossovers: Godzilla, Evangelion, Virtual Sanrio Puroland, Segaland, Midgar Pack and Reload Revival Royal. Each pack is expected to add new stages and character skins, and the whole thing will cost players $40. Race in the clouds against Sonic and SpongeBob? It looks nice! Here’s why some existing players feel screwed.
This dates back to a tweet posted by Sega before Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds» launching June 2025. “Pre-orders for the Digital Deluxe Edition are now live! » he reads (via The player). “This edition includes: base game, Season Pass, all future paid downloadable content, Sonic Prime bonus characters.” It’s this “any future paid DLC” that got Sega in hot water and conducted its latest promotional marketing for Year 2 DLC to get the community X-rated.
“All future DLC” is very different from the first year’s DLC, although that’s what some people might have expected based on recent industry practices. “I paid $100 for this shit, guess I learned my lesson,” one player wrote on Reddit. “Whether intentional or accidental, these DLC rug pulls have become increasingly common as online games become launchpads for mini-DLC showcases. They’re especially common in fighting games when certain types of content are promised at launch as part of an initial expansion pass, only for a stage here or character there to drop out somehow along the way.”

What adds insult to injury is that some players already feel like there are too many of them. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Crossover characters and stages were saved for paid DLC. “It still annoys me that the whole point of this game is that it’s a crossover between different properties, but the game launched with only sound characters and no crossovers,” one fan wrote on the PS5 subreddit. “They started slowly adding Sega characters, but charging extra for anything that wasn’t already a Sega character.”
We will see if Sega offers a make-good of a sort of fair marshal. THE CrossWorlds DLC packs typically cost $6 and players will have some time to decide whether to purchase them. While the Godzilla pack arrives at the beginning of November, Evangelion does not arrive until early 2027. Timing on the Final Fantasy VII things are still to be determined.
