What you need to know

  • In FBI Season 9, Episode 3, OA’s undercover operation comes to an end.
  • Jeremy Sisto explains what the aftermath will look like for OA, discusses Jubal and Isobel’s dynamic, and much more.

After the end of the second episode of FBI In season 9, Jubal (Jeremy Sisto) discovers OA’s (Zeeko Zaki) secret while going undercover with Anna’s (Claire Coffee) attack team to eliminate them. And the third episode sees the rest of the team reading as well, because the situation has become so serious. But to defeat Anna, they must find out who is protecting her – and be wary of what could happen, if ADIC Green (Curtiss Cook) finds out… maybe? TV Insider spoke with Sisto about the episode’s revelations and what’s next. Warning: spoilers for FBI Season 9, episode 3 early!

OA manages to install a bug so the team can listen in on Anna’s calls with her shield, who ends up being Ernest Carver (Terry Serpico), the Deputy Secretary of Defense for the Department of Defense. As they discover, with Green on board after catching them, she helped keep her son out of prison after a teenage girl died in her car by staging a suicide…but their investigation to get a family member to turn (first her son, then, after his “overdose death,” another faked death, him) on Anna. Ernest finally does so, after determining that he He was the one who was in the car with the teenager that evening.

Just as the team is about to arrest Anna and get OA out of there, he was arrested and found himself on the wrong end of Devin’s fists. But OA gets a chance to fight back in the ensuing shootout between the FBI and the task force, and he even saves Devin from death.

But the episode features some interesting character beats. When Jubal apologizes to Isobel (Alana De La Garza) for following her (which is how he found out about the sting operation), she tells him not to check his calculations when she decides without him. He admits he was surprised she didn’t want his opinion, and she says she didn’t want to be talked out of it.

Meanwhile, Anna points out to OA that she has seen how his time on the Strike Team has changed him and that he is no longer the same person he used to be. Then, when everything is over and Anna is in custody, OA and Maggie go to a bar. Some days she really thought he was dead, she tells him, and he explains that he hasn’t contacted her because if he had been caught, that communication chain would be a hit list. But when she comments that he must be happy to see his badge again, there’s something about the way he looks at it…

Below, Jeremy Sisto explains what happens after this withdrawal.

How satisfying was it to not only defeat Anna, but to do it as a team and have Jubal there and put the handcuffs back on OA? Because Jubal doesn’t leave the JOC often. So when he does it, it’s for something big, and it was obviously big.

Jérémie Sisto: Yeah, it was important because it was really important to Isobel and OA. I mean, it was important because when you do this job, there are tough choices to make. There are some fine lines to walk. And you must always maintain your sense of values and morals when it comes to accomplishing what you deem necessary in a matter. So when you encounter someone in your world who has no qualms about completely ignoring morals, it truly becomes a personal issue. That’s why Isobel, OA and the whole team are taking it upon themselves to truly eradicate this problem… it’s like removing a cancer from your system. It’s like you have to go in there and make sure you have all the leftovers there too, because this kind of thing can really destroy an organization if it’s not done in a way that protects core values.

But now it seems the question arises as to how OA feels about being back. There’s the way he looks at his badge at the end and those comments from Anna about how he’s changed on the strike team. So, what can you say about what Jubal will see in OA when he returns to work?

I think Jubal is as aware as he is more so through Isobel. It’s his job to make sure these partnerships work. OA is going to go through some tough times and I think her partnership with Maggie is going to be tested in a new way. Obviously they’ve already been tested, but there’s something quite dark that seems to be happening to him at this point. So it’s great to see Mike (Weiss, showrunner) and his team and the cast exploring that and trying to find a path that feels real and earned, and it’s complicated, and I think these relationships earned it. It’s been a lot of water under the bridge, but it’s something that’s really going to take some time to sort out.

Isobel tells Jubal that she didn’t read it because she didn’t want to be dissuaded. Would he have dissuaded him?

I mean, at the end of the day, he’s very good at saying, “You’re the boss and I’ll follow you to hell.” “But he sees many sides to most issues, and I think he’s an important person to have, and he can also be an irritating person to be around when you’re doing something that you know is toeing a line that you’re not completely sure you should be on. So, I don’t think he would have talked her out of it, but I think he would have challenged her all along.

Are we going to see tension between Jubal and Isobel as a result, or is it just like, “It’s business as usual, it’s part of the job, we’re moving forward”?

There’s a conversation to be had, but it’s pretty clear. Jubal understands quite well why she did this, and he doesn’t blame her. There could be trouble there. One might even wonder if she was thinking correctly, if she was thinking in the way he might have hoped. But ultimately, he respects where she’s coming from and why she didn’t involve him. So I don’t think it affects – it goes into a long-standing relationship where there’s mutual respect.

ADIC Green, after finding out what the team does, simply says, “I want to participate.” Did this surprise Jubal?

Without fail. He really wasn’t sure about the new ADIC and he has a nephew that he put on the plate. So it was a really nice eye-opener to see that this guy who was very enthusiastic about my way or the highway joined my team. And it’s a scary notion when someone says, “You may have to put your morals aside to be on my team.” » And obviously, no one on our team agrees with that. But the good thing is that – and maybe partly because he put himself forward by recommending his nephew, but I think more than that, it’s just that he has a similar moral code and his coming on the scene was more about testing the waters, seeing if there was anyone on this crew who likes to go out and be a rebel for the purposes of his own ego or something like that. So it turns out that’s pretty much what it is. He was kind of testing the courage of the people around him and, selfishly, he’s a great actor, a great character. He brings so much warmth and dynamism to the scenes that I’m happy he’s one of us.

I really liked that Jubal gave OA his badge back.

Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. It was fun to do.

What’s next for Jubal? Is there something with his family? Will we see him again soon outside of the JOC?

Well there’s a really cool episode on CIA where I go and help Nikki (Necar Zadegan) on a case, and it’s a really fun adventure where the tone of the show is slightly different. So there’s a little more sense of humor that can be used to make Jubal feel comfortable.

And then coming up, we have some pretty intense stuff, but I haven’t read it yet. I just heard the explanations for what’s going on, and it sounds pretty crazy. It seems pretty crazy that his wife is caught up in her day job, and so it’s never a good thing. They’ve been together again for a while now, and I think it’s this long-standing story that we’ve explored before, which is that when you’re married to someone who is in this position, it’s really a third dynamic, it’s not easy, and they’re both going to have to figure out how to make it work.

Last time, one of her informants went to her house, to our house, and he promised her it would never happen again. And so I imagine if, from what I can tell, what happens in these next few episodes, it’s going to be a challenge for their marriage. But I can’t say too much, but I’m excited about it. So far, things are going well with him and his marriage, and the children are doing well. No news is good news FBIbecause the only time these storylines come into play is when they affect daily work, and that means they’ve gone bad. So far everything seems good, but I wouldn’t feel very comfortable in this security or disconnection between the two worlds.

Yeah, because we’ve seen every time his son is involved in an episode, it’s never something good. But there’s also the fact that he has a daughter who… Are we going to see her?

I mean, I really wondered too if it was going to come into play. And yeah, I mean, it opens up the possibility of a lot of different scenarios, but Mike and his team do a great job of exploring these different topics, these different geopolitical elements and these big stories. And I think that’s the most important thing in this show, and the whole character comes from there. And Jubal has been such a rich character over the years that, of course, I’m always excited when things come into play, but it’s a challenge. Because privacy has to be really, really shitty to get into the…
