If you take blood pressure medication or know someone who does, there’s a new recall you’ll want to know about.
Inventia Healthcare first recalled certain lots of chlorthalidone tablets, used to treat high blood pressure, in June. Then, on September 3, the company issued a separate recall for an additional lot of the drug. On September 17, the FDA classified the September recall as Class II. (The June recall was also classified as Class II).
Chlorthalidone is a diuretic, or “water pill,” that helps your kidneys eliminate excess water and salt. This helps reduce high blood pressure and fluid retention, reducing the risk of organ damage that can cause a heart attack, heart disease, heart failure, stroke, kidney damage, or eye damage that can impact your vision.
According to the FDA, a Class II recall means that if you use or are exposed to a recalled product, you may experience temporary or medically reversible health problems, but the likelihood that these problems will be serious is considered low.
The reason for the recall is listed as “dissolution specification failure.” The FDA defines proper dissolution as dissolving the active ingredient from its dosage form so that it can be absorbed by the body. In other words, If a medicine does not dissolve as expected, your body may not absorb enough of the active ingredient, which could make the medicine less effective in treating your condition.. No further information on the reason for this specific recall has been provided by Inventia Healthcare or the FDA.
