Final Fantasy 7 Revelation director says he ‘tried his best’ to fight for physical release
These days, as we’ve talked about, there’s a lot of push for discless editions, digital editions, and I’ve used my position to make an argument for the physical version as much as possible. I completely understand that there are people who perhaps don’t really agree with this direction or who don’t approve of it. But I would just like to say that I hope you understand that I totally see where you’re coming from and I’ve done my best.

Hamaguchi previously said the game is expected to require around 200GB of storage, and he told IGN that matching Rebirth’s dual-disc setup would have meant a compromise on fidelity. Sony, meanwhile, announced in July that it would stop producing discs for new PlayStation games starting in January 2028, even though discs still generate a significant portion of revenue from major PlayStation exclusives. As laudable as Hamaguchi’s desire is, the result is still a physical release that doesn’t contain the full game, which probably tells us that the physical medium as we know it is on its way out.
