Fire ravages Hitler’s ‘Eagle’s Nest’ mountain retreat
Berlin
German police say they have arrested a suspect after a fire broke out at a historic guesthouse known as the “Eagle’s Nest”, used as a refuge by Nazi officials including dictator Adolf Hitler.
Around 200 firefighters and rescue workers were battling flames in the Berchtesgaden region of southern Bavaria after the building, known as Kehlsteinhaus, caught fire on Friday, police said.
Police are investigating whether the suspect, who was arrested near the scene, has any connection to the fire, they said in a statement.
There was no immediate word on a possible motive.
Built in 1938 as a guesthouse for Nazi officials and their guests, the building, set in a spectacular Alpine setting, is separate from Hitler’s nearby summer residence, known as the Berghof.
Now owned by the State of Bavaria, the Kehlsteinhaus was classified after the war as a historical monument recalling the Nazi period.
