TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Republican state attorney general James Uthmeier intensified its fight with OpenAI and its founder Sam Altman Monday by asking a Florida court to block the tech giant from further developing its artificial intelligence technology while its legal battle plays out.
In his latest move to put guardrails around AI, Uthmeier is trying to leverage recent panic over the tech’s unchecked growth in Washington and beyond to prove that ChatGPT and other AI models are dangerous commodities. Uthmeier is seeking an injunction against OpenAI that would prevent the company from developing new AI models without third-party approved protections, and prevent minors from using its popular chatbot.
“If Sam Altman I really meant what he said about slowing down, he can join our request to the court”, Uthmeier said Monday in a video posted on social media. “If it fails to do so, we ask the court to do what OpenAI will not do for itself: protect Florida families.”
